Took my 2 sons out today to watch the practice – – wall to wall boats as usual, but everyone seemed to play nice!

Here are a few photos of the show – overcast conditions didn’t make for the best pictures – but the fly-by’s were great as usual.
Hope the weather holds good for tomorrows show !!

Between Arugula And Beets

Arugula Pesto recipe

I’ve realized that I didn’t tell you yet about some recent work I’ve done for Mindful Magazine again. I like what I am doing for them. I like that I am able to create recipes using my favorite foods.
In these two past issues (August 2013; October 2013), the food column tells you about arugula, and beets. Green and red. Both amazing colors and ingredients to style and photograph, I thought.
While Angela Mears shares insights about both vegetables, I share four recipes: an Arugula Pesto; an Arugula Salad, Beet chips, and a Beet risotto.
I hope they make you hungry.
Bon appétit!

Massacre At A Nairobi Mall

Smith Island In the middle of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, a tiny island may soon become an early victim of climate change. Smith Island is the last inhabited island in Maryland, a place where residents, hearty watermen who make their living catching oysters and blue crabs, still speak in the Cornish dialect of their ancestors. Many Smith Islanders can trace their ancestry back 12 generations to the English colonists who settled here in the 17th century. And yet their link to this land may soon be broken: Smith Island is eroding. Though scientists differ on how long it will be before the island is underwater, anywhere between 30 and 100 years, there is no dispute about the cause: rising seas. The global trend of rising ocean levels is especially acute in the Chesapeake Bay, where water is rising at twice the world average.

Some local television stations reported hostages had been taken, but there was no official confirmation. Gunmen stormed the shopping mall in Nairobi killing at least 15 people in what Kenya’s government said might be a terrorist attack, and sending scores fleeing into shops, a cinema and onto the streets in search of safety. (Goran Tomasevic/Reuters) # 22 A woman (C) who had been held hostage reacts in shock on Sept. 21 after she was freed following a security operation at an upmarket shopping mall in Nairobi where suspected terrorists engaged Kenyan security forces in a drawn out gun fight. Apple Loves Being The Underdog

Cyclists who ride between dusk and dawn know that a sturdy bike light is key for safety. To address this need, a group of self-proclaimed “bike geeks” has designed what it is calling “indestructible” lights

Fortified Bicycle Alliance is a team of students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With more than a month remaining, Fortified’s Kickstarter campaign for its ultra-durable front and rear bicycle lights — the Aviator and Afterburner, respectively — has already doubled its $24,000 funding goal.

The team said it was inspired to launch after a friend had his bike light stolen, and was subsequently hit by a car, according Fortified’s page on the crowdfunding platform. To combat would-be thieves, Fortified’s lights lock onto a bicycle’s seat post and handlebars using a “proprietary security screw.” Read more…

Do You Qualify For An Obamacare Tax Credit?

21). Rather than invest in these start-ups and take a 3 to 10 percent stake, Graham said the funding will be a “charitable donation.” “We had a hypothesis that many newly founded non-profits could benefit from the same techniques we use to help start-ups,” he wrote on Y Combinator’s site. “We tested this with Watsi in the Winter 2013 batch and it worked wonderfully.” The program kicks off in Mountain View, California and lasts from January through March. Once a start-up is accepted, Y Combinator will donate $11,000, plus $3,000 times the number of founders. Non-profits will go through the motions like any other for-profit and be required to present during Demo Day 2014.

Because you and your employees haven’t yet been able to evaluate plan options available through the SHOP Exchange, you purchase ACA-qualifying coverage for your employees through a private broker instead. As long as you get coverage through the SHOP exchange when your plan renews on October 1, 2014, you would be eligible for the tax credit in both 2014 and 2015. The amount of the tax credit varies based on the size of your workforce and wages. Only businesses with fewer than 10 full-time-equivalent employees and average annual wages below $25,000 would qualify for the full 50 percent credit. Larger companies with higher average wages must use a (slightly complicated) formula to determine what size credit they qualify for. Eileen Elliott, an attorney specializing in health care issues at the Burlington, Vermont-based law firm Dunkiel Saunders is advising business owners not to be discouraged by the potential paperwork: “For those employers that think they could be eligible for this, go talk to your accountant to figure it out, because it’s worth real money,” she says. And maybe a lot more than you realize. The two-consecutive-year limit on the tax credit only applies to coverage for 2014 and beyond.
